Preventative Tips and Maintenance to Avoid Plumbing Emergencies
Understanding and maintaining your home’s plumbing system can significantly reduce the likelihood of emergencies. Consequently we believe in empowering our clients with knowledge and practical tips to keep their plumbing in optimal condition. Furthermore, here’s an extensive guide to help you prevent common plumbing issues:
- Regular Inspections: Schedule regular inspections of your entire plumbing system. These check-ups can catch potential problems like small leaks or early signs of pipe deterioration before they escalate into major issues.
- Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners: While it might be tempting to use chemical cleaners to clear blockages quickly, these can often cause more harm than good, corroding your pipes over time. Instead, opt for mechanical methods like plunging or use enzymatic cleaners that are less harsh on your plumbing.
- Be Mindful of What Goes Down Your Drains: Prevent sink and toilet blockages by being cautious about what you dispose of down your drains. Avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper, and keep food scraps, oils, and grease out of your kitchen sink.
- Use Drain Strainers: Simple mesh screens can prevent hair and other debris from clogging your bathroom drains. They are easy to install and can save you from troublesome blockages in showers and sinks.
- Monitor Water Pressure: Too much pressure can stress your pipes and lead to leaks or bursts. Install a pressure regulator if your water pressure is consistently too high. Regularly check the pressure to ensure it’s within a safe range.
- Insulate Pipes: In colder climates, frozen pipes are a common issue. Insulating your pipes can prevent them from freezing and bursting. Pay special attention to areas in your home that might not receive as much heat.
- Know How to Shut Off Your Water: In case of a major leak or burst pipe, knowing how to quickly shut off your water supply can prevent extensive damage. Make sure everyone in your household knows where the main shut-off valve is located.
- Respond to Problems Quickly: If you notice slow drains, gurgling sounds, or any changes in your plumbing system’s performance, don’t wait for the problem to worsen. Addressing issues promptly can often mean a simpler, cheaper repair.
- Educate Your Household: Make sure all household members know what not to flush or put down drains and how to handle minor clogs. A little knowledge can go a long way in preventing mishaps.
- Seasonal Checks: Certain times of the year can put extra strain on your plumbing system. Before winter, ensure your system is ready for cold weather, and check for leaks and efficiency before high-usage periods like summer.
By following these preventative maintenance tips, you can extend the life of your plumbing systems and minimize the chances of facing an emergency. However, if an issue arises, remember that BE1 Property Services is just a call away, ready to assist with any plumbing emergency you may encounter.

Blocked Kitchen Sink 10/10
“Sent quote request at 6.40am and Michael responded within 10 mins and fitted me in the same day. He and Lawson fixed the problem quickly and efficiently. Will definitely use their services again.”
Replacement hot water cylinder 10/10
“Michael and Lawson were outstanding. They dedicated time to evaluate the situation and provided us with superb advice. We have recommended them to our family and will continue to highly recommend them in the future.”
No cold water supply to bathroom and new taps fitted to kitchen 10/10
“Had no cold water supply to upstairs bathroom. BE1 attended at 8.30 as scheduled. The problem was investigated and discovered extreme limescale to cold water tank which was blocking outlets. System was drained and vacuumed removing limescale, restoring cold water supply to bathroom. Also new kitchen taps fitted, this sounds a relatively simple job, unfortunately due to the age of the old pipe work, this became extremely difficult, virtually no room for Lawson to manoeuvre. Excellent work. Cannot praise Michael and Lawson enough. Their customer service and care is superb. Thanks to both.”
